Japanese Society of Oral Medicine

The history of the Japanese Society of Oral Medicine goes back to the Research Group of Oral Mucosal Membrane, which was established in 1991, and developed into the Japanese Society of Oral Mucosal Membrane in 1995. The society changed its name to the Japanese Society of Oral Medicine in 2011, and acquired General Incorporated Association status in 2014.
The society was originally designed to cultivate and promote oral medicine in Japan, and aims at progress in clinical/basic research and dissemination of knowledge concerning oral medicine, with the goal of expansion of academics in Japan and an increase in public health. Oral medicine involves conservative and non-surgical medical management of oral diseases, mainly oral mucosal diseases, although its academic area is closely associated with oral diagnosis, radiology, pathology, laboratory examinations, pharmacology, and microbiology.
As academic activities, the society holds an annual general assembly and academic conference, issues the academic Japanese journal “Journal of Japanese Society of Oral Medicine” twice a year, and also includes as an organizational journal the official English journal “Journal of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, Medicine, and Pathology” published by the Asian Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons (Asian AOMS).
The society actively cooperates with related academic organizations in Japan, including the Japanese Society of Oral Diagnosis/Oral Medicine, the Japanese Society of Oral Pathology, and the Japanese Society for Evidence and the Dental Professional, and thus frequently holds joint annual academic conferences. The society also maintains international links with the American Academy of Oral Medicine (AAOM) and the European Association of Oral Medicine (EAOM).
